Online ruler in cm, mm and inches
Your free online ruler for everyday measurements
Measure an object in three steps
- Calibrate your screen. Open Calibrate and match a standard card, select your device, or enter the full screen diagonal. Verify the scale against a physical reference.
- Choose your scale and edge. Select cm, mm or in, then choose Top, Bottom, Left or Right. Fullscreen gives you more room.
- Read from zero. Gently align one end of the object with the zero mark and read the other end. Click the ruler to place A and B as endpoint guides.
Any Online Ruler turns your browser into a convenient measuring tool for small objects. Use this free online ruler to check a craft piece, compare stationery, or estimate the length of a replacement part. There is nothing to install and no account to create. Choose inches, centimeters, millimeters, or pixels, then place a ruler along the screen edge that suits your object. Start with calibration so the displayed scale reflects your screen rather than a generic pixel estimate.
Use an online ruler in cm or mm
Select cm when you want an online ruler in centimeters with smaller divisions between the numbered marks. Each centimeter contains ten millimeters. Switch to mm for an online ruler in mm when reading short distances or checking small components. Use the numbered ruler marks to read the length of your object. An online ruler in cm is useful for drawings, paper decorations, labels, and classroom activities where metric dimensions are easier to follow.
Measure with an online ruler in inches
Choose in to display inch markings, including divisions of one sixteenth of an inch. Place one end of your object at zero, or set marker A at its starting point and marker B at its opposite end. For online ruler inches at actual size, calibrate before trusting the scale. Switching units changes the ruler labels while keeping your markers in place. One inch equals exactly 25.4 millimeters, which makes comparisons between imperial and metric measurements straightforward.
For a comfortable setup, choose the top or bottom edge for width and a side edge for height. You can display more than one edge at once. Leave enough space around the object to see its endpoints clearly. If you need a real online ruler for repeated checks, keep the same calibrated display and compare each item from the same starting point. The keyboard shortcuts let you switch units, toggle guides, or open fullscreen without interrupting your measuring routine each time.
How to make an online ruler actual size
An accurate online ruler depends on calibration, because different screens display the same pixels at different physical sizes. Auto-detect checks supported device profiles and saved calibration. If your display cannot be identified, choose its model or enter its screen diagonal. For a direct physical reference, use Credit Card calibration and match the outline to a standard card measuring 85.60 millimeters wide. You never need to photograph the card or enter its details.
Check the result against a real ruler or another known dimension. Keep your object aligned with the scale and avoid pressing hard against the display. Recalibrate after changing monitors, display settings, or browser zoom. An actual size online ruler is convenient for everyday comparisons, but precision work still needs an appropriate physical measuring instrument.
Can I use a 12 inch online ruler?
A 12 inch online ruler needs enough usable screen space to show twelve physical inches after calibration. That is 30.48 centimeters. A smaller phone cannot display that entire length at actual size. Try a larger screen, select a suitable horizontal or vertical edge, and use fullscreen to remove browser chrome. Do not shrink the page to force a twelve inch scale onto a smaller display: an online ruler to scale must preserve the calibrated spacing.
Does this online ruler use a camera?
This online ruler tool measures against your screen; it does not use a camera or estimate dimensions from photographs. If you searched for an online ruler camera, that is a different measurement method. Here, guides mark your selected endpoints, while the crosshair helps align positions. Dark mode changes the appearance without changing your calibration. Read your object's length directly from the ruler markings, and return to the measuring area whenever you need another quick check. Press Escape when you want to clear your markers and start with an unobstructed measuring area.
